The cloth

Chanderi

A sheer, glassy cotton-silk. Holds its shape without weight and catches light along the fold.

Description

A full anarkali in chanderi, gathered from a high empire seam into roughly six metres of hem. Lined in mul so it holds its volume without netting. Made to order.

Order a fortnight ahead of the event. We cannot rush the lining.

Fabric & care

Chanderi is woven from unbleached, ungummed yarn, which is where its transparency comes from — the raw silk warp is never degummed, so the fabric keeps a glassy sheen instead of a matte finish. It is a difficult cloth to sew and an easy one to wear: almost weightless, but structured enough to hold a pleat. The town has been weaving it since the thirteenth century, and the GI registration now protects roughly four thousand looms.

Dry clean only. Store folded with the fold line shifted every few months so it does not set.
